With four directors and an all-star cast, this Academy Award-winning war epic from producer Darryl F. Zanuck chronicles World War II's harrowing D-Day invasion. The who's-who ensemble cast is led by John Wayne, Sean Connery, Robert Mitchum and Henry Fonda, just to name a few.

In my opinion, the best, most amazing war movie ever made! This movie completely puts Saving Private Ryan to shame. SPR's token scene, the landing at Normandy, pails in comparison... only 20 minutes and light on extras compared to The Longest Day's hour-long assault and gigantic assault force. SPR is the modern man's watered-down, narrow-focused, grisly action-centered dish... but The Longest Day is the entire meal, offering the total picture of the D-Day invasion, from the executive planning to the troop preparation to the parachute troops, ground attack, and beach assault. This is THE movie for war and history buffs. Also, if you like SPR, I think you owe it to yourself to see the original D-Day movie that was written and made by the WWII generation. Requires an interest in how the whole D-Day operation played out, as well as the little bit of patience to handle a 3-hour 1962 war movie, but an otherwise HIGHLY recommended movie for anyone, especially war and history enthusiasts.

This film is a classic on several fronts. First, as far as film-making is concerned, it utilized a number of techniques which were ground-breaking at the time. For example, there is a marvelous scene where the Allied forces are entering a French town, a town which was significant earlier in the film, and the camera uses a very long single-take scene. The camera itself is poised very high in the air, I know not how... it does not seem to be in a helicopter, yet I have no idea how they filmed it from the birds'-eye perspective... and the camera slowly pans along the town's street for a full minute or more without a single break. This is a remarkable feat that is even today very rarely attempted. Second, the film is significant for its capture of the complexity and remarkable miracle of the D-Day landing. It manages to bring in numerous viewpoints of the events leading up to the invasion, then draw all those viewpoints together by the end, all the while keeping the viewer intrigued and concerned about the characters involved. Finally, the all-star cast is something that has not been duplicated since. No matter who your favorite actor may be from that era, you will find him here. Even Sophia Loren, showing the tremendous power of her feminine charms, in a day when actresses kept their clothes on. This film is essential for those who are A)interested in great film; B) those who are interested in the truth about WW2; C) those who are capable of thinking for themselves.
