Screen legend John Wayne pays tribute to oil field legend "Red" Adair, as Wayne plays Chance Buckman, a colorful Texan who tames out-of-control infernos in exotic locations around the world. He's joined by a crew that includes Jack Lomax, Joe Horn, and his assistant, Greg Parker. Between blazes Chance "carries the torch" for Madelyn, the wife who left him 20 years earlier because of his dangerous lifestyle, and Greg has his hands full at the poker table and in the bedroom with Chance's spunky daughter, Tish.

In this tribute to real-life legend Red Adair (and to 1960s special effects), an oil-field firefighter (John Wayne) risks his life extinguishing infernos of black gold all over the world. But his lucky life takes a downward turn when his daughter Tish (Katharine Ross) and his buddy Greg (Jim Hutton) tie the knot. The match hardly pleases papa -- particularly when Greg lets his new wife join in all their hell-fighter action.

After the first Gulf War, we heard a steady stream of news reports about workers putting out oil fires in Kuwait. I immediately understood what they were describing, because I had seen Hellfighters, and they were using the same techniques.
I really liked this movie. I thought Chance Buckman was the perfect role for John Wayne's character...his character seemed to match the sort of person who would be doing this for a living. Fighting the fires while getting shot at by guerrilla fighters seemed a big much, until I considered what is going on with people working on the infrastructure in Iraq...not much different.
I've heard the complaint that the special effects are not up to today's standards, but they work for me...they do not interrupt my suspension of disbelief, and they are not distracting like some of todays whiz-bang special effects.
I think this is one of John Wayne's best movies.

This movie made me fall in love with John Wayne! This one is my favorite depictions of the knight in not-so-shining-armor saving the day. If you're not sure about John Wayne and you want to get a taste for this classic hero character, check this one out.

Quite dated but a great movie for John Wayne fans. Better than average script with some over the top acting from artists who should know better. Nice romance between Jim Hutton and Katherine Ross. Based on the exploits of famed firefighter Red Adair. Still not bad for 122 minutes long.

I totally enjoy this movie I grew up watching John Wayne in many of his movies. This is good clean family movies that I prefer. Regardless of the story line John Wayne always gets his women... I great family movie... No sex, no swearing, no violence.
